Section Games: The Victors

 

Following the end of Monday’s first class, students at the California High School Summer Program enjoyed a jam-packed afternoon and evening.

After grappling with the Platonic dialogue Euthyphro and Socrates’ discussion of piety in their second class, the programmers quickly changed their clothes and trekked down to the campus athletic fields for some spirited competition in a beloved annual event, the Section Games. Grouped into their classroom sections, students faced off in a variety of relay races, egg tosses, and other contests. Amid much excitement, Section 3 emerged victorious. Prefects then surprised the students with water balloons, and the field turned into a messy but glorious battleground.

A dinner of hot dogs and potato wedges followed in St. Joseph’s Commons, and then it was time to buckle down for a study session in St. Bernadine of Siena library. Students pored over the Pre-Socratic philosophers and completed their second Greek tragedy, Antigone, for the next day’s classes. The library remained impressively quiet while students delved into their reading assignments.

… before heading to the campus coffee shop to enjoy tasty iced mochas whipped up by a few of the prefects. Some stuck around to chat or enjoy games of ping-pong, pool, and air hockey, while others made their way outside for a little night volleyball.

The fun lasted right up until curfew, at which students returned to their residence halls to find chips and salsa waiting for them. Roaring fires were soon burning in the dorm courtyards, and the camaraderie carried into the night — not too late though, because today’s schedule is not a bit less busy.
