Summer Program Students

As soon as they wrapped up Thursday’s classes on Euclid and Genesis, students on the California High School Summer Program dove right into the afternoon’s recreation period. For some, that meant painting, sketching, or playing cards, but for most it meant the highly anticipated volleyball tournament!

Dinner looked a little different last night, as, rather than eating inside St. Joseph Commons, programmers dined outside at a barbeque prepared by prefect Luke Connelly (CA’26). They gathered in groups on picnic blankets, overlooking Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel, delighting in a classic American meal of smoked brisket, mac & cheese, bread, and watermelon.

They next proceeded to St. Bernardine of Siena Library for the final study hall of the program. Students practiced the last of their Euclidean propositions of the week, wanting to end on a positive note. They also read a passage from The Mason-Bees by J. Henri Fabre in preparation for Friday’s Natural Science class.

It was then time for Theology and Philosophy on Tap! Throughout the program, students have had the opportunity to ask questions on any subject — life, morality, theology — which they can write on notes and place in a box for just this occasion. On Thursday night, Program Chaplain Rev. Miguel Batres, O.Praem. (’08) tackled the theology questions, while Program Director and tutor Dr. John Finley ('99) carefully answered those about philosophy. Both provided the students with careful, well-formed answers to their queries, humbly and with much wisdom.

The night then took on a more contemplative tone, as students made their way to the Chapel for Adoration, Confession, and Rosary. A choir consisting of prefects and programmers sang throughout, filling the room with a sense of awe and reverence.

The evening having drawn to an end, students then returned to the residence halls, ready to rest up for the last day of the program. Come back to the Summer Blog this afternoon to read about their final classes!
