Summer Program Students

When Tuesday’s classes finished for the afternoon and the recreational period of the day began, California High School Summer Program students took advantage of the full range of wonderful activities available to them!

Many took to the field for an intense soccer game, while others chose to play basketball in the athletic center, cooling off in the pool after some well-shot hoops. Outside, further fun was afoot. Some students sat beneath the sun and painted together, listening to music and chatting as they made beautiful artwork and strengthened their friendships. One group hiked to the painter’s shack, enjoying the trails, racing to the top, and viewing campus from a new point of view.

When afternoon activities finally ceased for dinner, the programmers walked to St. Joseph Commons for pasta, garlic bread, and more camaraderie. Later, they made their way to St. Bernadine of Siena Library, where they studied more Euclid propositions and read selections from the pre-Socratic philosophers for Wednesday’s classes. Having read and discussed the material themselves, the prefects offered assistance and advice to the students, sharing tips and truths gained from their own experience at the College. Soon, study hall ended and the students rested their minds with a Rosary in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel.

After, students and prefects funneled out of the Chapel and into St. Cecilia’s Hall, where Max Alvarez and Rose Anderson (both CA’26) led the pack in classic swing dancing. They taught the programmers steps, turns, and twirls they will use during their formal dance on Saturday evening. Giggles ensued as students tried new moves for themselves, and by the end of the night, there was as much improvement as there was enjoyment!

Finally, it was time to return to the residence halls for an evening filled with music, Mexican food, games, and even a piñata! Laughter and singing bellowed from the courtyards of both dormitories as students celebrated another day well-spent.

Return to the Summer Program blog later to read about the students’ treatment of the pre-Socratic philosophers!
