Students at the Summer Program

The students on the California High School Summer Program are living life to the fullest, making many friends and sharing good times.

As soon as Thursday’s classes were over, they hurried over to dance practice, where they learned new East Coast swing steps, ending with the basics of waltz. Afterward, a group of girls decided that it was a perfect afternoon for a swim and headed for the ponds. As usual, the Athletic Center and sports field were bustling with athletes playing basketball, Spikeball, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee. No matter how the students spent their afternoon, though, they enjoyed each other’s company and soaked in their surroundings. “I love the campus!” shared Camille J. “It’s so beautiful.”

Eager for some sustenance, the programmers shared a dinner of roast pork with apricot glaze, cheesy sliced potatoes, and chicken rice soup. In their last official study session of this week, they followed up on yesterday’s propositions with some new ones and read Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling.

After searching for the truth in their studies, students went to adore the Truth in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. During Adoration, College Chaplain Rev. Brendan Kelly heard confessions and Summer Program Chaplain Fr. Sebastian gave a moving talk on the parable of the prodigal son. “When we are under the yoke of the divine commandments we may consider them a burden, but when we throw off that yoke, we forge for ourselves a harsher one,” remarked Fr. Sebastian. The students prayed the Rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament and finished their contemplation by listening to a heartfelt recital of “Jesu Dulcis Memoria,” “Sancta Maria, Mater Jesu,” and “Abide with Me,” sung by a choir of prefects.

Before returning to the residence halls, the group stopped by St. Patrick’s Coffee Shop for root beer floats, conversations with friends, and intense card games. When all finally returned to the dorms, the men enjoyed some corn puppies, while the women shared charcuterie boards. Worn out from the busy but fun day, the students went to bed, excited for today’s two classes and the upcoming weekend.
