Students at the Clarke

When we last left off, the 2021 New England High School Summer Program students had finished up their morning class and were riding on two large buses toward the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Everyone enjoyed packed lunches of sandwiches, chips, and cookies on the way, and between the good food and the spectacular scenery, the ride seemed to pass in no time at all.

After Thursday night’s insightful talk on art and beauty from Dr. John Nieto, the group was ready to appreciate the high quality artwork that filled the museum. For the greater part of the afternoon, programmers and prefects marveled at works of Rembrandt, Monet, Renoir, and many other artists and sculptors. Students also took walks around the Clark’s beautiful grounds.

Before leaving the museum, everyone gathered on the steps for a group photo.

The group then piled back into the buses, this time headed for Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, for an evening of Beethoven in Lenox, Massachusetts. The program featured renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and other artists in an outdoor concert, and everyone was excited to continue the culturally rich outing.

The buses dropped the crowd off a couple hours before the concert started, affording students ample time to enjoy a dinner of cheese pizza on the lawn adjacent to the stage. Then it was time to settle down with folding chairs for a night of beautiful music. The concert began with Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 3, followed by his Symphony No. 2 arranged for a piano trio (piano, violin, and cello). The audience was held spellbound, and the performance was flawless and captivating. The trio even finished off with an encore of the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The night was clear and cool, and the experience was unforgettable in every way.

After an incredibly full day, programmers piled back in the buses and slept most of the ride home. They awoke for a Saturday of basketball and volleyball tournaments, as well as an open-mic night this evening. Come back Sunday for photos and updates!
